Vertava Health Blog Post Focuses on What the Highly Potent Opioid Fentanyl Is Used For

Nashville, Tenn. — Vertava Health, an addiction treatment provider with multiple locations throughout the United States, recently published a blog post on the highly potent opioid that's been in the news so much lately, fentanyl, and what it's used for.

The new post starts by going over what fentanyl is and what it does to those that take it. It describes fentanyl as a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It’s also a drug that is prescribed frequently to help those experiencing severe pain, especially after surgery or when that pain is deemed to be chronic.

The post describes fentanyl as a prescription drug that can be administered in several ways, including shots, patches, or lozenges. Fentanyl is also produced illegally and can be sold as a powder, put into eye droppers or nasal sprays, or made into pills. The drug’s versatility also makes it easy to add to heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, so many times people do not even realize they have taken it.

Fentanyl’s popularity as a recreational drug stems from the fact that it takes very little of it to produce a high. It then becomes a less expensive option than other types of recreational drugs. Fentanyl has many street names, such as dance fever, jackpot, poison, goodfellas, great bear, China girl, he-man, and Apache. China is the country where most fentanyl is produced and then imported or smuggled into the U.S.

The new Vertava Health blog post states that all of the previously mentioned factors have made synthetic opioids like fentanyl the most common substances that lead to overdose deaths in the United States. In 2017, fentanyl was involved in 59% of opioid-related overdose deaths, up from just over 14% in 2010. Currently, around 136 fatal opioid overdoses occur in the United States every day.

The post explains that fentanyl is a drug that binds to the body’s opioid receptors in the brain. These receptors are located in areas of the brain that are linked to feelings of pleasure and pain. Some common side effects of fentanyl use include confusion, constipation, extreme happiness, drowsiness, trouble breathing, nausea, and sedation.

Signs of addiction to fentanyl include being unable to stop consuming the drug even if someone wants to, needing larger amounts to get high, strong cravings, withdrawal symptoms, problems at work or school, and family relationships and friendships that have taken a negative turn. The post points out that some of the withdrawal symptoms commonly associated with fentanyl addiction include problems with sleep, vomiting, diarrhea, fentanyl cravings, bone pain, muscle pain, cold flashes, and uncontrolled leg movements.
