Singapore Architect Firm Receives Good Design Award for Semi-Detached House

ADX Architects Pte Ltd, an architectural firm based in Singapore, is proud to announce that they have received the Singapore Good Design Award for exceptional architecture work on a 30-year-old semi-detached house known as the 'House with Screens'. The project required the reconstruction of the existing 30-year-old house to make it suitable for the client’s family that is made up of a couple and their two young children. More information about this project can be gleaned from https://sgmark.org/project-description/?id=114.

The family members love the outdoors and they wanted to ensure that the greenery in front of the house will be preserved. They also wanted to have a play area for the children on an elevated lot a few steps above the car porch. The idea was to rethink the use of the various spaces with a focus on making the indoor spaces functional while improving them by providing them with a link to the outdoors.

They decided to open up the ground floor public spaces by getting rid of the enclosing walls and improving the natural ventilation and natural light through the use of full height glass doors. A spacious timber patio was constructed outside of the living room to allow it to extend outside. And a textured featured wall was provided to effectively blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside. These adjustments created a bright and airy living room.

The dining area was allowed to extend to the outside by using an extension of an outdoor timber deck, resulting in exterior dining space for a relaxed family gathering after hours. And following the concept of an connection to the outdoors, the roof was redesigned to add a series of skylights above the straight flight of stairs leading to the second floor.

A spacious family area greets one upon climbing the stairs to the second level - where an outdoor planter spans the whole length of the space. This planter can be accessed through huge sliding aluminium glass doors, effectively allowing some greenery and natural light to reach the upper floor. The planter can be seen from the common bath to the family area until it reaches the master bedroom.

The master bedroom is situated at the second level, in front of the house. Balcony space designed as a sky patio was provided in front of the large bedroom. A series of sliding timber screens were provided with the specific placements influenced by the owners’ preferences for privacy and lighting.
