Singapore Architect Firm Awarded Contract to Develop Site for Singapore's Urban Farming Initiative
ADX Architects Pte Ltd - an architectural firm based in Singapore, is proud to announce that in association with Nature’s International, they have won a contract to develop a site for Singapore’s urban farming initiative. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has launched an initiative to transform the roofs of one of nine multi-storey carparks ear-marked for farming of crops and vegetables. These are rooftops of Housing Board multi-storey carparks, made up of five single sites and two clusters of two sites each.
The project was the result of the Singapore Government’s realization that they need to increase their food production capacity in view of the current battle against COVID-19 that has resulted in lockdowns in various countries throughout the world. This has put Singapore in a difficult spot in view of its 99 percent dependence on imports for its food supply. This is one of the strategies embraced by the SFA to boost local food production as part of Singapore’s 30 by 30 goal of producing 30 percent of Singapore’s nutritional requirements locally by 2030.
Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has stated that COVID-19 has placed in a spotlight the value of further strengthening the country’s food security and supply chain resilience. As such, the Singapore Government will continue in its efforts to assure that they have a stable supply of food and essential items. The SFA will continue to collaborate with the Housing Board to increase multi-storey carpark rooftop sites to be used for urban farming by public tender. This initiative is congruent with the Housing Board’s Green Towns Programme, which has the goal of cooling towns using greenery.
The site that ADX Architects, in collaboration with Nature’s International, will be working on is the multi-storey carpark located at Tampines Street. Nature’s International is a company made up of a number of parties who were established Singaporean farmers who have extensive farms in the region, including Cambodia and Vietnam. One is TwinAgri in Cambodia and another is Agrivix in Vietnam.
