Panama City Dermatologist Dr. Jon Ward Achieves Certification In Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Dermatology Specialists of Florida has announced that dermatologist Dr. Jon Ward, MD has passed the American Board of Dermatology’s 2021 Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery Subspecialty Certification Examination.

This achievement makes him among the first in the nation to be double board-certified in both Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. Dr. Ward has performed over 20,000 Mohs micrographic surgeries to successfully treat skin cancer in patients under his care. He has also been recognized for excellence in non-invasive cosmetic procedures, including laser skin resurfacing, CoolSculpting, and injectables (Botox, Sculptra, and other fillers).

When asked about his reaction to securing the certification and what it means for his practice going forward, Dr. Ward says, “I am extremely thrilled and proud to have completed the certification as it finally contextualizes my years of experience performing Mohs micrographic surgeries and gives my patients the assurance that their health is in safe hands. The certification in this subspeciality is only afforded to those who have displayed a high standard of knowledge and skill in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. I am thankful to the board for noting my expertise in this exciting field of medicine and for recognizing my drive to study and master all the future developments that will undoubtedly occur in it. I am dedicated to continuing to serve patients suffering from skin cancer and this certification will be a great barometer for them to gauge my skills and commitment.”

Mohs surgery, named for Frederick E. Mohs, the surgeon who developed the technique, is a highly specialized surgery for treating skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States. Since its development, Mohs surgery has been refined into the most precise and advanced treatment for skin cancer, yielding success rates up to 99 percent. Today, Mohs surgery has come to be accepted as the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (BCCs and SCCs), the two most common skin cancers. Mohs surgery is so effective because 100 percent of the surgical margins are evaluated, compared with less than 5 percent by traditional techniques. Readers can learn more about Mohs surgery by heading over to the center’s website.

When asked about steps that individuals can take to mitigate their risk for skin cancer, Dr. Ward says, “Skin cancer is highly curable, when detected and treated early. That is why patients are encouraged to have their skin checked by a board-certified dermatologist annually. If skin cancer is found and Mohs micrographic surgery is recommended, you should try to find a board-certified Mohs surgeon for treatment, such as myself and others at Dermatology Specialists of Florida, as they are some of the most qualified medical professionals to remedy your condition.”

Dr. Ward founded Dermatology Specialists of Florida in 2006 and has served as its president since that time. He has since performed skin cancer surgeries using all recommended techniques including Mohs surgery, superficial radiation therapy, erbium laser ablation, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, electrosurgery, and curettage.

Dr. Ward earned his medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine before completing his dermatology residency at the University of Massachusetts, where he earned the position of Chief Resident. He has been published in the Journal of Dermatology and presented lectures across the country. In addition, Dr. Ward has been a leader in the local and state medical community, has served as president of The Bays Medical Society, and was elected the first president of The Bays Medical Society Health Trust. He has served on the board of the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. He is a past president of the Bay County Medical Society and he is also on the Florida Medical Association Board of Governors.
