Skin Beauty Bar supporting Black History Month
February is Black History Month. Every year since 1976, the nation has paused to recognize and celebrate the achievements of African Americans in U.S. history. American Presidents designate a theme each year and this year that is 'Black Health and Wellness'.
And what could be more meaningful than supporting black-owned health, beauty and wellness businesses? One such business is Meka Mathis' Skin Beauty Bar in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
Mathis has been a master esthetician for more than 20 years. She started her boutique 18 years ago with a vision to create unique beauty services for every one of her clients. Mathis had to clear the hurdles that are often placed in front of Black entrepreneurs, including access to the funding, resources and technical assistance all new businesses need.
Now a huge success, Mathis is renowned for hiring and training people within her community. Her business is proof that Black women-owned boutiques are on the rise and ready to take on a leading role in the beauty industry.
Since opening, Skin Beauty Bar has provided its unique products and services to almost a million customers. Mathis' many services including facials, waxing, eyelash lift, airbrush tanning and body contouring.
"I started the business with a vision to create unique beauty services that would have positive impacts on my clients," she says.
Skin Beauty Bar has also adapted to the changing needs of her clients, especially during the pandemic. Many people developed 'Maskne' (acne breakouts caused by wearing masks), and Mathis created a derma treatment for this new type of skin problem.
Mathis and her team's goal of providing quality services have led to a loyal client base and glowing testimonials..
One client, Chellese, says: "All of their services are professional and so relaxing. The facial and sugaring are my faves. I love supporting a business that is local, woman-owned and Black-owned."
Another client, Tiara Welch, was very happy to discover Skin Beauty Bar.
